So I’ve been talking to people about this lately, and it’s been on my mind a lot:

Listening.

At school, when we’re out, basically anywhere people ask you “How are you?” - It’s a simple question. But a question we hear so many times we probably don’t even realize it’s being asked…Yet, how often do people ask this question honestly; with good intention, actually caring to know the answer?

Since I have watched the documentary ”Kurt and Courtney” and heard this phrase describing Kurt Cobain it has really stuck with me:

“He listened…instead of just waiting for his turn to speak.”

(By the way to say that I love Kurt Cobain isn’t enough.)  <— sorry, side note!

Anyways, I’ve been trying to put his nature into practice. It’s true, when I give that extra minute of time, genuine time, it makes a difference.

The problem is we walk around, so alone in our own heads, wondering if people are thinking the same thing we are, but when questioned, respond stating the exact opposite.

  • “How was your weekend?”
  • “What did you do?”
  • “Did you hear about so and so?”
  • “There’s this party on Friday. I want you to come to it with me.”

…Small Talk…Blah Blah Blah

Such trite conversation- that leaves me wondering- If we could wear our thoughts, like our clothes, then would our connection with people become stronger? Less mundane?

If we could see our thoughts and carry them with us, if they were glued to the outer-end of our skin, wrapped around our bodies, and visible through the human eye, then would the world care more to understand? To look closely?

To listen?
